RESUMEN
Childhood
anxiety disorders: A major challenge for
the future of mental health
Considerable
progress has been achieved in clinical
research on childhood anxiety disorders
(CADs). Prospective longitudinal studies have
shown that CADs are major pacemaker for adult
psychopathology. However, compared to the
richness of research on anxiety disorders in
adulthood there are still accumulated needs
for more research with children. In
particular, there is an urgent need in
understanding the etiology and treatment of
childhood anxiety disorders. Based on a
developmental psychopathology framework the
presentation will give an overview of the role
of CAD for improving mental health. It will
summarize current cutting edge research on the
etiology and treatment of anxiety disorders in
children with a focus on the role family in
CAD. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) an
established first-line treatment for anxiety
disorders in children will be introduced and
strategies for the improvement of mental
health in children will be discussed.
